The Importance of Studying the Bible

Gwendolyn Hall, Fort Washington, MD

Catagory: Volume 2, Issue 9 and 10

The uttermost desire of a Christian should be to study the Word of God.  Most of us in our lifetime have received a love letter from someone that we loved very dearly.  Do you remember your reactions?  God, our Heavenly Father, has also written many love letters to His children in a book called the Bible.  The Bible is also referred to as scriptures, precepts, commandments, laws, testimonies, and the Word of God.

The Bible is the unique Word of God and the divine revelation of His written Will to man.  It was written by more than 40 authors by the inspiration of God.  It is a library within itself, containing 66 books.  The Bible is divided into 2 sections, (the Old and the New Testaments).  The Bible is the only book that can penetrate and change a man's heart.  The central theme of the Bible is salvation of man through Jesus Christ.  We can trust the Word of God to be true and it is a super source of knowledge and wisdom.  Throughout the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, there is not a conflict of opinions or confusion of ideas.

The Lord has commanded us to study, search and meditate on the scriptures.

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me, John 5:39.  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth, 2 Timothy 2:15.  I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways, Psalm 119:15.

When we study the Word of God we gain wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of His divine revelation and everything therein, including man.  The Bible reveals the creation of the heaven and the earth and everything therein.  It also reveals the absolute unity of God with the Son and the Holy Spirit.  They are called the Godhead or the Trinity.  Other highlights of this great book include His plan of redemption, reconciliation, the mystery of His Will to man, the ministry of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit in the earth, the second coming of Jesus Christ, and many precious promises.

The Bible is so rich in knowledge that when you study it you can only read and comprehend a small portion of it at a time.  You cannot study this book and remain the same.  As you begin to read and take the words off the pages and put them in your heart, your life will definitely change.  The Word of God is deposited into our hearts through the ears, eyes and mouth.  As we study and meditate upon the Bible daily, we are to believe what it says and act upon it.

Romans 10:17 So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.  Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Isaiah 40:8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for- ever.  Proverbs 4:4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.  Proverbs 4:5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget [it] not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

The Word of God is not to be doubted or questioned.  It is to be treasured more than any other wealth.  There is no other book on Earth more powerful than this book, THE HOLY BIBLE.

Psalm 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
