Foundation For The Body of Christ

Robert McCurdy, Washington, DC

Catagory: Volume 2, Issue 7 and 8

Every born-again believer needs to know and understand the basic foundation in order to grow.  Too many saints desire to prophesy, preach, lay on of hands, or stand in the office of prophet.  All of this is good if God has called you and approved you for this ministry.  There are too many saints in the body of Christ looking for the spectacles and miracles. Spectacles draw the attention to the person's ego.  Miracles are good, but God does not want his children living from miracle to miracle.  Miracles are for crisis.  God will perform miracles to get his children out of any crisis, but Father God never intended for his children to live in crises.  God wants more for you than that.  His desire is to have His children living in blessing to blessing and your blessings will overtake any crisis.

The saints of God must be rooted and grounded in the Word.  This is vital!  You can hear all the sermons and testimonies, but without a good foundation it is futile if you have not learned the oracles of God.  Father God expects every born-again believer to have a solid foundation and walk in love.  When an individual is born into the Body of Christ he/she is spiritual babe, and must first be fed spiritual milk.  The writer to the Hebrews had much to say about this. He says “But it is hard to explain because you are dull of hearing (slow to learn).

For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which [be] the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.  For every one that useth milk [is] unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.  But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil, Hebrews 5:12-14.

Christians should be further along in their spiritual development than they are.  The writer to the Hebrews says: Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of:

(1)     repentance from dead works, and of

(2)    faith toward God,

(3)    doctrine of baptisms,

(4)   the laying on of hands,

(5)    the resurrection of the dead, and

(6)   eternal judgment.

And this will we do if God permits, Hebrews. 6:1-3.

Once Christians receive this foundation they are ready to move on to maturity.  In this scripture, six foundation stones are listed for this foundation.  These foundation stones should be learned and understood by all believers in order to build a strong foundation and become spiritually mature.  Jesus spoke of this foundation.

I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice.  He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock.  When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.  But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.  The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete, Luke 6:47-49 NIV.

Without knowledge and understanding of these foundational areas our walk with God will be unfruitful.  No other foundation can be laid but Jesus Christ and Christ Crucified.
